Doula
Doula supports, educates and empowers families during pregnancy, birth and the post-partum period. Doula works in liaison with healthcare professionals.
What does a Doula do?
A doula is a professional support companion that gives non-medical support for the mother and her partner during pregnancy, labour/birth and postpartum. She provides comprehensive emotional support throughout the pregnancy, birth and postpartum period. They are trained to provide continuous, one-on-one care, as well as evidence-based information, physical and emotional support to birthing people and their partners.
The doula assists the family in finding their own resources and prepare for the excitement of welcoming a new life. She provides the necessary knowledge and skills that help the family make informed decisions. An important part of the relationship is the support and guidance given to each couple through active participation and information given in the various sessions.
Doula works in collaboration with other healthcare professionals.
How do you benefit from the help of a doula?
According to research and customer experiences, delivery is usually faster with the support of a doula. There is less need for medical analgesia during labour (eg epidural anesthesia) and less medical interventions (eg suction cup or caesarean section). The likelihood of breastfeeding successfully is also improved.
Families, using a doula during their birth, are generally very happy with their childbirth experience. The strong support from a birthing coach during the pregnancy and soon after childbirth helps greatly to prevent postpartum depression.
